Sow the Living Word

Jesus told a parable found in the book of Mark 4:26-29 likening the Kingdom of God to a man who sowed seed in the ground and then went about his business. After a number of days he went back and the seed had sprung up, began to grow and the verse says, “he knoweth not how.” Obviously he had faith that it would grow; that is why he planted it. But there is something about the process of germination and growth that we can observe, but have little power to affect. This is true in the realm of natural things and even more so in the realm of the supernatural.

Dr. A.T. Robertson, the famous Greek scholar, commenting on this passage noted, “This secret and mysterious growth of the Kingdom in the heart and life is the point of this beautiful parable given only by Mark.” According to Matthew 13:19 the seed is the word of the kingdom which is the Word of God. And Jesus told us in the same verse that it is sown in the heart.

So what Jesus is telling His disciples in this parable is the supernatural work of the kingdom of God takes place when the people of God sow the seed of the Word in the hearts of men and women. It is a supernatural work. We don’t completely understand how it works; but we, like the farmer, need to sow in faith expecting a harvest to come as a result.

Paul had this concept in mind when he explained to the believers in 1 Corinthians 3:6 – “I have planted, Apollos watered; but God gave the increase.” Paul preached the Word of God and by doing so planted it in the hearts of his hearers. According to Hebrews 4:12 “… the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.” And Isaiah 55:11 tells us that His Word will not return void, but will accomplish that which pleases the Lord.

So, what is the conclusion of the matter? Let’s get the Word out into the fields! Look for ways to sow it in the hearts of men – a tract, a business card, an email, in your facebook messages, on a card, written on a napkin, any way you can imagine – sow the living Word that it may spring up in the hearts of men.
