Will You Join God's Laboring Few?
In Matthew 9:37-38 Jesus said to His disciples … “The harvest truly is plenteous, but the labourers are few; Pray ye therefore the Lord of the harvest, that he will send forth labourers into his harvest.” The words of our Lord are just as pertinent today as they were when He first spoke them two-thousand years ago. Given the current world population of over 6.8 billion people, perhaps we can say the harvest is even more plenteous. But the concern of the Savior remains the same, the laborers are few.
Where can we find the needed laborers? Who will join the ranks, put in the time and wear out some shoe leather? Who is still willing to speak the Words of truth to a hostile generation that has been poisoned with cultural lies and religious rhetoric? Are there any left who will share the concern of the Savior?
The cults are still out there peddling their false hopes in the heat of summer and the cold of winter. The contemporary churches continue to entertain the masses with their mega-media extravaganzas. Secular humanism, the religion of the irreligious, will have its members actively involved in their various forms of self-worship. All of these are busy recruiting, but not for the Savior.
Dear Christian, it’s up to us. Jesus is looking for laborers among the living; those who have received new life through the new birth. We know the God Who created the heavens and the earth. We have the Words of life. We possess the blessed hope. We have the Spirit of Truth. We are His ambassadors to this lost world.
This past Wednesday evening we heard the story of Frank Jenner, the faithful witness on George Street in Sydney, Australia who responded to God’s call for laborers by purposing in his heart to give out tracts and a simple witness to 10 people each day. There were days he was not able to get all ten, but he made up for it on other days. He remained steadfast in his commitment for over 40 years. This one man was responsible for over 146,000 people hearing the truth. He sowed the seed, others watered and God gave the increase resulting in an army of believers actively serving God all over the world.
And so, I hope to use this series of articles: “Seed for Sowers”, to stir us up, to encourage each of us to join God’s laboring few. Will you be one of them?
